Law… or not?

The Official Highway Code

Published by TSO (The Stationary Office) and issued with the authority of parliament, it certainly has official backing, however it’s not Law!

Disregarding any of its 300+ rules will not, in itself, lead to a prosecution, however the Code can be used as supporting evidence in court, when someone is prosecuted under other specific laws.

The purpose of the Highway Code is to keep all road users safe, and it’s been around for over 80 years, yet it’s as though governments don’t have the strength of their own convictions, calling the contents “Rules” instead of laws.

Give it legal status in its own right then things would be clearer for everyone.
